EFT Explained
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) was originally developed and taught by Gary Craig. EFT advanced traditional therapy through the incorporation of the Chinese meridian system. While acupuncture and other variants focus on healing physical ailments, EFT shifts attention to emotional issues. With such a deviation from both techniques, EFT is able to help us change emotional issues, usually improving physical and performance issues as well as emotional and mental ones.
No one can deny that we are all made of energy, which forms a unique system in our bodies. Information travels instantaneously through us, and without that energy flow, we die. In much the same way as acupuncturists use the body’s energy in placing the needles to provide healing, EFT uses tapping points that produce profound effects. These changes can radiate through our physical, mental, and emotional well being – with a lasting impact.
It’s an accepted construct in traditional therapy to work through childhood memories in order to treat current issues and negative emotions, to focus on changing our thoughts through hours of effort and vigilant awareness. In this way, the idea is conveyed that it is the memory causing negative thoughts, feelings, and actions. However, EFT posits that it is not the memory causing negative emotions as much as the disruption in the body’s energy system from that event is. This idea is the cornerstone for EFT: “The cause of ALL negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.” By using the simple EFT tapping points taught here, any issue can be addressed – including anxiety, trauma, PTSD, depression, phobias, anger, fear, worry, guilt, grief, shame, and limiting emotions involved in performance, public speaking, business success, sports, and more.
For anyone who’s ever shaken with anger, felt butterflies before speaking to a crowd, stopped breathing in fear, or just gotten a headache after a stressful day, the connection between our emotions is clear. Therefore, it is not a far leap to conclude that a shift in emotional energy can have profound healing effects for physical ailments as well, making EFT the one method for healing that should be in everyone’s toolbox. And we have only just begun to discuss how it can be used for everyone!
